Rusty Jeffers - Posing Advice

Rusty Jeffers posted a reply to a request for posing advice on the forum of Bodybuilding.com:

"Posing advice?? Don't only do mandatories in your routines!! That's a big one as far as I'm concerned..if you have to, make sure you're doing them correctly and with some personality and flair...I'm just not into dancing my way through a routine or any of that crap...have some integrity for the audience and show them muscle with an artistic flair or something dignified. If ya gotta dance, go to a bar, if you're on stage, learn how to pose. Anyone who needs real posing advice, buy my DVD "Pose Like A Pro" or do one of my posing clinics which are almost every saturday morning. Go to my website and go onto my forum and choose Posing Practice for more information about the clinics. Or email me at rustyjeffers@cox.net. I've rarely had anyone not win after coming to my clinics. Years of experience is what you'll get.

I know I haven't been on here in quite a while, I'm not much for hanging on the computer I'd rather be in the gym training!!! I'll check back in more often..."

Rusty Jeffers - Posing techniques / tips

Rusty Jeffers posted a message to the forum of Bodybuilding.com about posing techniques or tips on stage. Here are the extracts:

"...................... speed means nothing, some people pose slow, some quickly...depends on what you LIKE to do. I will mention one thing, you have all mandatory poses, those are great to know how to do well and how to execute them well for prejudging, but in a routine, remember the audience has seen a string of mandatory poses from everyone to the same top 40 crap all day and all night. Now you need to learn different poses that make you look good and feel good to do them.

Try to never start with a front double....everyone does that...BAD IDEA...start with a really cool or striking pose that is different and you can get everyones attention right off...sometimes you can do something entirely casual. I started a few routines standing sideways...just standing there...twirling my 'stache, made them wait a second then hit a series of very cool poses that flowed together, keeps 'em watching and makes good entertainment. You're not gonna win a show by hitting a string of mandatories, and you're not gonna win a show strictly by good posing, I'm a great example of that. BUT I have won shows because my posing was way above the guys who were placing neck and neck with me. I've been told that for years. Just learn DIFFERENT stuff, then learn how to string them together.

My DVD [Pose Like A Pro] is made for beginners. How to execute all mandatories, stage presence, how to put together a routine. How to transition between poses, what to do with your hands and feet, etc. I will make one for advanced bodybuildiers, which if I'm being really honest, many pros would do well to learn. Hope I didn't get too winded, but posing is my passion. I know you'll do well in your next show, you're well on your way.

Rusty"

Hope to see the new DVD for advanced bodybuilders soon!

Rusty Jeffers - His thought about posing on stage and body conditioning nowadays

Rusty Jeffers posted a message to the forum of Bodybuilding.com about what he think posing should be and body conditioning nowadays. Here are the extracts:

"........ For the comment on Ed Corney, I really studied the hell out of his moves for a long time, I consider what I do an art form and I'm glad that people are vocal enough to say they think it's important. Also Zane, Mentzer, everyone that made bodybuilding exciting to me as a kid. These guys had "signature" poses, no one really has that anymore do they? It kills me that people within this sport take posing so lightly. All I see are guys walking around onstage waving for people to clap for them without even posing. Or all they do is a string of mandatories. As an amateur, I always worked hard on my presentation, I think it helped a lot..routines anymore are an after thought. That's too bad. I still think it's important to show the fans a professional routine. Mandatories can get pretty old.

I've seen many pro physiques placing well JUST because of conditioning. I don't consider having the most shredded physique synonomous with an instant win or placing higher than a complete physique. It's the combination of size, symmetry, shape and condition, plus being able to display it in a way that is exciting and dramatic to watch should set it off from the rest. Anymore it's all about condition. All the pros know that. Look at the placings, some with lagging bodyparts...hey, this is just my 2 cents but a pro shouldn't HAVE that little problem, but there's plenty of unbalance out there isn't there?? Lots of big guts too. BUT, if you're shredded ripped...it's forgiven. Don't worry about those small calves or lacking hams, you've got striated glutes!! Winnnah!! So if I lack the extreme conditioning to some, consider this. I've had striated glutes and quads and was told I was smooth. I've come in a show slightly smooth and told I was at my best shape ever. Go figure. That comment was from the same well respected person who was at both shows...You can only do so much before you are giving in to the mentality that being insanely ripped is the only key. I personally don't think having striated glutes makes you a better bodybuilder, nor do I think it looks all that great...soon we will all have to wear g-strings to show striated glutes. Absolutely, it can be impressive as how lean someone is, but it shouldn't have gotten to the importance that it has. I'm going to try to be my leanest ever for my next show, and I'll give ya a routine to remember. It's all I can do. I'll always try to improve, but I AM a little sick of hearing about conditioning. I'm sure I'm going to catch a lot crap over this little rant!!!"

Right, extreme conditioning is bad to our health. We should not force our body to a detrimental condition in order to win. And extreme conditioning should not be praised in the judges' minds.

How Rusty learned to pose

Rusty said how he learned to pose in his group:

"Actually posing was really hard for me and I learned from a few of the old timers when I was a teenager, I'm sure I was a disappointment to them in the beginning, actually I know I was at first...but I made sure I followed their moves and kind of elaborated on them show to show...I wish posing was given more weight in the judges decision as most major pros now don't have any "signature" poses. That's what was kind of cool for me coming up through the sport, learning their poses, etc. My favorites were Mike Mentzer, Serge Nubret, Samir Bannout, Lee Labrada, Mohammed Makkaway, of course, Arnold, and damn, I forget the best guys name..yeah, Ed Corney , he's probably the best. It's a shame no one seems to enjoy that part of the sport, all the pros these days seem to be locked into the mandatories because they really don't care. They get nothing out of extra work in this area, which accounts for the same 8 poses in every magazine and nothing interesting to look at. How many times can you see a front double bicep or crab shot??

(of course that's my take on the situation and several pros have asked me to do their posing lately) But hey, that's my ace in the hole!! I have done a few tapings of my posing video, but the lighting was really bad and we're re-doing it in April just before the Masters Pro World on the 15th.

Rusty"

Well, Rusty's posing routine is one of the most beautiful ones. Hope to see Rusty's DVD soon.
